Predictions For Premier League Gameweek 38

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I didn’t do too well last week with one perfect prediction, four correct outcomes and seven incorrect outcomes which means I won’t be hitting my target of finishing in the top five in my predictions league. Here’s a look at how the top five in that league stands.

My choice of Erling Haaland as my captain just about paid off last week as he brought me a few points, but with two games I had hoped for an awful lot more. This week’s captaincy choice isn’t easy and the chances are I’ll probably go with Mohamed Salah away to Southampton on the last day of the season. Other good options are Haaland of course, Harry Kane and maybe even an outside bet on Roberto Firmino.

Sunday May 28

All games 4.30pm

Arsenal v Wolverhampton Wanderers

Emirates Stadium, London

Arsenal lost 1-0 away to Forest last week, but they will want to finish their season off on a high with second place already guaranteed. They have taken 16 points from their last seven home games with only City scoring more goals on their own patch, but they have conceded too many goals at home. They have only taken nine points from their last eight games and it’s that run which cost them the title with only City scoring more goals.

Martin Odegaard is probably the Arsenal player most likely to do well for fantasy managers this week.

Wolves drew 1-1 at home to Everton last week and they can still move above Chelsea into 12th place if they win this game and Chelsea lose theirs. They have only taken two points from their last seven away games with only Forest scoring less goals on the road. They have won five of their last eight games, but all of those games were at home and no other team has scored less goals.

I can’t see any Wolves players to recommend to fantasy managers in this game.

I think Arsenal will sign off with a home win and have a few goals to spare.

Prediction: 3-1

Aston Villa v Brentford And Hove Albion

Villa Park, Birmingham

Villa drew 1-1 away to Liverpool last week and they will definitely finish in seventh place if they win this game. They have won their last six home games and they only conceded one goal in those games. They have only won two of their last six games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals.

I’m not sure there are any Villa players doing enough at the moment to recommend them to fantasy managers for this game.

Brighton won 3-1 at home to Southampton and drew 1-1 at home to City last week and they will finish in sixth place. They have lost three of their last five away games, but only Arsenal have scored more goals on their travels. They have taken 13 points from their last seven games to qualify for European football for the first time ever and only the top two have scored more goals.

With so many games recently it’s difficult to know which Brighton players will start, but Kaoru Mitoma, Alexis MacAllister and Evan Ferguson are probably the best bets for fantasy managers.

It’s not easy to know what way this game will go, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Brentford v Manchester City

Gtech Community Stadium, London

Brentford won 3-1 away to Spurs last week and they could still finish as high as seventh if they win this game and other results go their way. Arsenal and Newcastle are the only teams to win away to Brentford, but no other team has drawn more games on their own ground. They have won four of their last five games and they won’t make it easy for City in their last game.

I suggested Bryan Mbeumo might do well for fantasy managers last week and he didn’t disappoint, but I’m not sure if he can match it again this week.

City won 1-0 at home to Chelsea and drew 1-1 away to Brighton last week and it’s just a matter of how many points they have to spare over second placed Arsenal at this stage. Only Arsenal have taken more points and scored more goals on the road, but City could change both of those records with a win in this game. They had won 12 games in a row before drawing with Brighton and no other team has scored more or conceded less goals.

With City’s rotation policy it’s not easy to know what players will play as they have two cup finals still to come, but Erling Haaland is probably the best option for fantasy managers.

I think Brentford will make a game of it as City’s minds could be elsewhere so a draw is probably the most likely scenario.

Prediction: 2-2

Chelsea v Newcastle United

Stamford Bridge, London

Chelsea lost 1-0 away to City and 4-1 away to United last week and they could finish as low as 14th if they lose this game. They haven’t won in their last six home games with only Everton and Southampton scoring less goals on their own patch. They have only won once in their last 11 games and it’s only the points they got under Thomas Tuchel that have kept them up.

I can’t see any Chelsea players to interest fantasy managers in this game.

Newcastle drew 0-0 at home to Leicester last week to make sure of a top four place and third place is still a possibility. They have taken 13 points from their last six away games with only City conceding less goals on their travels. They have only won once in their last four games, but that was enough to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

If Newcastle push for a win to try to finish third then Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak could do very well for fantasy managers.

I think Chelsea’s woes will continue with Newcastle taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 1-2

Crystal Palace v Nottingham Forest

Selhurst Park, London

Palace drew 2-2 away to Fulham last week and they will definitely finish in 11th place if they win this game. They have taken 10 points from their last four home games and they will be looking to finish their season on a high in front of their own fans. They have taken 17 points from their last nine games and they scored 17 goals in those games, but only 22 in their other 28 games.

Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise are the Palace players who could prosper for fantasy managers in this game.

Forest won 1-0 at home to Arsenal last week to guarantee their survival and they could finish as high as 15th if they get anything from this game. No other team has taken less points scored less or conceded more goals away from home. They have taken 13 points from their last six games to keep themselves up, but only three other teams have scored less and conceded more goals.

Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi are the Forest players who could make a difference for fantasy managers in this game.

I think this will be a close game and Palace will probably make home advantage pay.

Prediction: 2-1

Everton v Bournemouth

Goodison Park, Liverpool

Everton got a last minute goal to draw 1-1 away to Wolves last week and they will stay up if they win this game, but any other result could prove to be disastrous for them. They have lost their last three home games and they conceded 10 goals in those games with no other team scoring less goals on their own ground. They have only won once in their last 10 games, but they drew five of them with only Wolves and Southampton scoring less goals.

Even with their need for all three points in this game I can’t see any Everton players who will do the business for fantasy managers.

Bournemouth lost 1-0 at home to United last week, but they could still finish as high as 13th if they win this game. They have won three of their last four away games, but only Forest have conceded more goals on the road. They have lost their last three games since securing their safety and only Leeds have conceded more goals.

I’m not sure there are any Bournemouth players to suggest to fantasy managers for this game as they don’t really have anything to play for in it.

I think Everton will get the win they need to keep them in the top flight for another season.

Prediction: 3-1

Leeds United v Tottenham Hotspur

Elland Road, Leeds

Leeds lost 3-1 away to West Ham last week and they have to win this game to have any chance of avoiding relegation. They haven’t won in their last four home games and they conceded 14 goals in those games with no other team conceding more goals on their own ground. They have only taken two points from their last eight games with no other team conceding more goals and their hopes of staying up are incredibly slim.

If Leeds are going to make a go of it Rodrigo and Jack Harrison are the players who could possibly do well for fantasy managers.

Spurs lost 3-1 at home to Brentford last week and they could finish seventh if they win this game, but they could also finish ninth if they lose. They have only won five of their 18 away games with only four other teams conceding more goals on the road. They have only taken four points from their last seven games and only five other teams have conceded more goals.

Harry Kane is almost certain to score in this game and he’s a very good choice for fantasy managers.

I think Leeds will lose their fight to stay in the top flight along with this game.

Prediction: 1-2

Leicester City v West Ham United

King Power Stadium, Leicester

Leicester drew 0-0 away to Newcastle last week and they need to win this game and hope Everton lose their game if they’re going to stay up. They have only won once in their last eight home games, but they have to win this game. They have only won once in their last 15 games with only three other teams conceding more goals.

If Leicester are going to have a chance of staying up then James Maddison and Harvey Barnes are the players who could be of benefit to fantasy managers.

West Ham won 3-1 at home to Leeds last week and a win in this game could move them up as far as 12th in the table. They have lost their last three games and they failed to score in two of them and they have nothing riding on this game. They have won two of their last three games to make sure they weren’t involved in the relegation struggle on the last day and they can concentrate on their upcoming Europa Conference League final.

I’m not sure there are any West Ham players to recommend to fantasy managers as they have nothing to play for in this game.

I think Leicester might just get the win they need, but it probably won’t be enough to keep them up.

Prediction: 2-1

Manchester United v Fulham

Old Trafford, Manchester

United won 1-0 away to Bournemouth and 4-1 at home to Chelsea last week to put themselves in prime position to finish third. They have taken 19 points from their last seven home games and they only conceded one goal in those games with only City taking more home points and no other team conceding less goals on their own patch. They have won their last three games and they will finish third if they win this game ahead of their FA Cup final against City.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are the best of the United players for fantasy managers and Luke Shaw could do well too if he recovers from his injury.

Fulham drew 2-2 at home to Palace last week and they’re going to finish in 10th place no matter what happens in this game. They have lost four of their last six away games, but only five other teams have taken more points on the road. They have taken seven points from their last three games and they scored nine goals in those games, but this game will be a tough task for them.

Aleksandar Mitrovic might just have something to prove in this game and he could be the Fulham player to have for fantasy managers this week.

I think United will sign their league campaign off with a win which will confirm their third place finish.

Prediction: 3-0

Southampton v Liverpool

St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton

Southampton lost 3-1 away to Brighton last week and it’s just a matter of how far adrift of the rest of the table they finish at this stage. They have lost their last four home games and no other team has taken less points, scored less or conceded more goals on their own ground. They have lost their last five games and they conceded 13 goals in those games with only Wolves scoring less goals.

I can’t see any Southampton players who could be of interest to fantasy managers in this game.

Liverpool drew 1-1 at home to Villa last week to put an end to their hopes of a top four finish and they will finish in fifth place no matter how this game goes. They have won their last three away games and they scored 11 goals in those games, but they only won three of their previous 15 away games. They had won seven games in a row before drawing with Villa and only the top two have scored more goals.

Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are the Liverpool players to have for fantasy managers in this game, but Roberto Firmino might just shine on his last day for the club.

I think Liverpool should be too good for a Southampton team who have finished at the foot of the table.

Prediction: 1-3

That’s it for this season.

See you next season.
