I didn’t do too badly last week, but I lost a little ground overall and hopefully I can recover that ground with the next round of games starting immediately. My captain choice of Erling Haaland paid off yet again with the ever dependable Kieran Trippier getting me more points as well as Martin Odegaard and Hugo Bueno came off the bench to add some points too. Too many of my players didn’t do anything though and I will have to think carefully about how to use the two transfers I have this week.
Normally Haaland would be my captain, but with both Chelsea and Fulham playing twice this week that might just change. I think I will probably have three players in my side between both teams and hopefully that will help me to climb up the rankings.
Monday 2 January
Brentford v Liverpool
5.30pm GMT, Brentford Community Stadium, London
Brentford won 2-0 away to West Ham on Friday night and that win was enough to keep them in the top half of the table. They have only lost one of their eight home games and three of their next four games are at home. They are unbeaten in five games, but they drew three of them and no other team has drawn more games.
With Ivan Toney doubtful it’s difficult to pick any other Brentford players for fantasy managers, but David Raya is definitely not the worst option.
Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at home to Leicester on Friday night and they’re now only four points off the top four. They have won their last two away games after failing to win the previous five and they have conceded as many goals as they have scored on the road. They have won their last four games, but they haven’t kept a clean sheet in six games and only the top two have scored more goals.
Mohamed Salah remains the best of the Liverpool players for fantasy managers with Darwin Nunez worth considering too.
I think this will be a close game which could go either way, but the chances are Liverpool will win narrowly.
Prediction: 1-2
Tuesday 3 January
Arsenal v Newcastle United
7.45pm GMT, Emirates Stadium, London
Arsenal won 4-2 away to Brighton on Saturday to increase their lead at the top of the table to seven points. They are the only team with a 100% record at home, but they have only kept one clean sheet in their seven home games. They have won their last five games and they scored 15 goals in those games with only City scoring more goals and only Newcastle conceding less.
Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are in great form for fantasy managers while Eddie Nketiah might be a good option too.
Newcastle drew 0-0 at home to Leeds on Saturday and they’re eight points behind Arsenal in third place going into this game. They have taken 13 points from their last five away games and they scored 13 goals in those games with no other team conceding less goals on their travels. They’re unbeaten in 12 games and no other team has conceded less goals.
Kieran Trippier, Nick Pope and Miguel Almiron are the Newcastle players of most interest to fantasy managers with all of their defenders worth considering too.
I think this will be a very close game with Arsenal probably just taking the three points.
Prediction: 2-1
Everton v Brighton And Hove Albion
7.45pm GMT, Goodison Park, Liverpool
Everton got a very good point in a 1-1 draw away to City on Saturday and that kept them one point above the relegation zone. They have lost their last two home games with only Southampton taking less points on their own ground and only Wolves scoring less goals. They have only taken two points and scored two goals in their last five games with only Wolves and Forest scoring less goals.
I can’t see any Everton players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.
Brighton lost 4-2 at home to Arsenal on Saturday and that defeat saw them drop to ninth place. They have won their last two away games and they scored six goals in those games with only Arsenal and Leicester scoring more goals on the road. There has been 27 goals in their last six games and they scored 14 of them which makes their defenders look a little suspect for fantasy managers.
Leandro Trossard is still the Brighton player most likely to return points for fantasy managers.
I think Brighton should be too good for Everton and should take the three points.
Prediction: 1-2
Leicester City v Fulham
7.45pm GMT, King Power Stadium, Leicester
Leicester lost 2-1 away to Liverpool on Friday night and they’re now only three points above the bottom three. They have lost their last two home games without scoring and only Southampton have taken less points on their own patch. They have lost their last two games and only West Ham and Southampton have lost more games.
With James Maddison still injured Harvey Barnes, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Timothy Castagne could all be the Leicester players to interest fantasy managers.
Fulham won 2-1 at home to Southampton on Saturday and that win moved them up to seventh place. They have won two of their last three away games and they scored seven goals in those games. They have taken 14 points from their last eight games, but no other team in the top half of the table has conceded more goals.
With two games this week Aleksandar Mitrovic, Andreas Pereira and Bobby De Cordova-Reid could all be good choices for fantasy managers.
I think this will be another close game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.
Prediction: 1-1
Manchester United v Bournemouth
8pm GMT, Old Trafford, Manchester
United won 1-0 away to Wolves on Saturday and that win was enough to move them up into the top four for the first time this season. They have taken 16 points from their last six home games and they have kept clean sheets in their last four games on their own ground. They have taken 20 points from their last nine games and they kept clean sheets in five of those games.
Marcus Rashford is the United player to have for fantasy managers at the moment with their defenders and keeper good choices too.
Bournemouth lost 2-0 at home to Palace on Saturday and they’re now only two points above the bottom three. They have lost their last three away games and they conceded eight goals in those games with no other team conceding more goals away from home. They have lost six of their last seven games and they failed to score in four of those games with no other team conceding more goals.
Despite Dominic Solanke and Philip Billing doing well for fantasy managers it’s difficult to pick Bournemouth players at the moment.
I can’t see anything other than a comfortable victory for United in this game.
Prediction: 3-0
Wednesday 4 January
Southampton v Nottingham Forest
7.30pm GMT, St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton
Southampton lost 2-1 away to Fulham on Saturday and that defeat meant they stayed at the foot of the table. They have only taken two points from their last five home games with no other team taking less points on their own ground. They have lost their last five games and they conceded 13 goals in those games with only Bournemouth and Forest conceding more goals.
Despite being at the bottom of the table James Ward-Prowse is in good form for fantasy managers at the moment.
Forest drew 1-1 at home to Chelsea on Sunday and that point means they’re only in the relegation zone on goal difference. They’re the only team without an away win with no other team scoring less goals on the road and only Bournemouth conceding more. They have only lost two of their last seven games, but only Wolves have scored less goals and only Bournemouth have conceded more.
I still can’t see any Forest players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.
I think Southampton should have just enough to get a much needed win in this game.
Prediction: 2-1
Leeds United v West Ham United
7.45pm GMT, Elland Road, Leeds
Leeds drew 0-0 away to Newcastle on Saturday and that point moved them two points above the bottom three. They have only won once in their last six home games, but they have a good run of home games coming up. The draw against Newcastle was their first clean sheet in nine games with only four other teams conceding more goals.
The Leeds players haven’t done too much since the return from the World Cup, but Rodrigo is still worth considering for fantasy managers.
West Ham lost 2-0 at home to Brentford on Friday night and they’re now only outside the relegation zone on goal difference. They have only taken one point and scored three goals in their last six away games with only Forest taking less points and scoring less goals on the road. They have lost their last five games and they only scored two goals in those games with only Wolves and Forest scoring less goals.
I can’t see West Ham players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.
I think Leeds might just manage a badly needed victory in this game.
Prediction: 2-1
Aston Villa v Wolverhampton Wanderers
8pm GMT, Villa Park, Birmingham
Villa won 2-0 away to Spurs on Sunday and they’re now only two points off the top half of the table. They lost their last home game after winning the previous three and they have three good home fixtures in their next four games. They have won three of their last four games and they scored eight goals in those games.
Despite their recent improvement there aren’t any Villa players doing enough to interest fantasy managers at the moment.
Wolves lost 1-0 at home to United on Saturday to remain one place and one point off the bottom of the table. They have taken four points from their last two away games after only taking one point from the previous six with only Forest and West Ham scoring less goals on their travels. They have lost five of their last seven games and no other team has scored less goals.
I can’t see any Wolves players to interest fantasy managers at the moment.
I think Villa will continue to climb the table by taking the two points in this game.
Prediction: 2-0
Crystal Palace v Tottenham Hotspur
8pm GMT, Selhurst Park, London
Palace won 2-0 away to Bournemouth on Saturday and they’re now only one point off the top half of the table. They lost their last home game after winning the previous three, but they did have two men sent off in that defeat. They won their last game after losing the previous two, but they have a very tough run of games coming up.
Eberechi Eze is the Palace player who looks like the best value for fantasy managers at the moment.
Spurs lost 2-0 at home to Villa on Sunday and that defeat meant they dropped out of the top four. They have only won two of their last six away games and their next away game is against City. They have only taken seven points from their last seven games and they play City twice and Arsenal in their next five games.
Harry Kane is probably the only Spurs player consistent enough to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.
I think this will be a very close game and the chances are the spoils will be shared.
Prediction: 1-1
Thursday 5 January
Chelsea v Manchester City
8pm GMT, Stamford Bridge, London
Chelsea drew 1-1 away to Forest on Sunday and they’re now 18 points off the top of the table. They have won four of their last six home games with only United and Newcastle conceding less goals at home. They have only won once in their last seven games and they failed to score in three of those games.
With two games this week Kepa Arrizabalaga, Mason Mount and Raheem Sterling could all be of particular interest to fantasy managers.
City drew 1-1 at home Everton on Saturday and that point saw them fall seven points behind Arsenal at the top of the table. They have won three of their last four away games with no other team conceding less goals on the road. They have only won once in their last three games, but no other team has scored more goals with only Newcastle and Arsenal conceding less.
Erling Haaland remains the best choice of the City players for fantasy managers, but the rest of the team aren’t doing an awful lot at the moment.
I think this will be a close game with City more than likely taking the three points.
Prediction: 1-2
Thursday 12 January
Fulham v Chelsea
8pm GMT, Craven Cottage, London
Fulham play their second game of the week and it’s another one which is pretty difficult for them. They have only lost one of their last five home games with only five other teams scoring more goals on their own ground. They have won their last two games after losing the previous two and they have a very tough run of games coming up.
The Fulham players I mentioned above could all do well for fantasy managers this week, but Mitrovic won’t play in this game if he gets a yellow card against Leicester.
This is Chelsea’s second game of the week too and they really need something from these games as they continue to lose pace with the top four. They have only taken two points and scored two goals in their last four away games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals on the road. They have only won once in their last seven games and they only scored five goals in those games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals.
As I mentioned above there are some good options in the Chelsea team for fantasy managers as long as they survive the dreaded rotation policy.
I think this will be a very close game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end all square.
Prediction: 1-1
That’s it for this week.
See you next week.
