Predictions For Premier League Gameweek 18

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I did fairly well last week with one perfect prediction, five correct outcomes and four incorrect outcomes, but it wasn’t enough to move me back into the top five of my predictions league. Here’s a look at how that top five stands.

My choice of Erling Haaland as my captain paid off yet again as he scored twice for City and I can’t see a better option for this week again. Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kieran Trippier, Martin Odegaard, Mohamed Salah, Miguel Almiron and Anthony Martial all returned points for me as I moved up to my highest position since Gameweek 13 and hopefully I can continue that improvement this week.

My current thinking is I won’t be making any transfers this week as I look to have two transfers next week with both Chelsea and Fulham playing twice. Of course the chances are I’ll change my mind late on and take a four point hit to bring in Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount or Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Friday December 30

West Ham United v Brentford

7.45pm GMT, London Stadium, London

West Ham lost 3-1 away to Arsenal after leading 1-0 on Monday and they’re only one point above the relegation zone. They have lost their last two home games with only two other teams scoring less goals on their own patch. They have lost their last four games and they only scored two goals in those games with only three other teams scoring less goals.

I can’t see any West Ham players doing enough to interest fantasy managers at the moment.

Brentford led 2-0 at home to Spurs on Monday, but they had to settle for a 2-2 draw and that point was enough to keep them in the top half of the table. They won their last away game against City, but that was their first away win and only three other teams have conceded more goals on the road. They have only lost one of their last seven games, but only five other teams have conceded more goals.

Ivan Toney remains the Brentford player to have for fantasy managers, but that could change soon with an FA charge hanging over him.

I think this will be a very close game with a draw being the most likely outcome.

Prediction: 1-1

Liverpool v Leicester City

8pm GMT, Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool won 3-1 away to Villa on Monday to move within five points of the top four. They have won three of their last four home games and only the top four have taken more points at home. They have won their last three games and they scored eight goals in those games.

Mohamed Salah is the Liverpool player to have for fantasy managers with Darwin Nunez plus all of their defenders and keeper worth considering too as they have a very good run of fixtures.

Leicester lost 3-0 at home to Newcastle on Monday, but they’re still only three points off the top half of the table. They have won their last three away games and they scored eight goals in those games while conceding none. They had won four out of five games before losing to Newcastle, but they will struggle to get anything from this game too.

With James Maddison injured Harvey Barnes and Timothy Castagne could be the Leicester players for fantasy managers to invest in, but maybe not in this game.

I think Liverpool will continue their improvement by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 3-1

Saturday December 31

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Manchester United

12.30pm GMT, Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton

Wolves came from behind to win 2-1 away to Everton on Monday to move off the foot of the table and within one point of seventeenth place. They have lost their last three home games and they conceded nine goals in those games with no other team scoring less goals on their own ground. They had only taken one point from five games before beating Everton, but they play three of the big six in their next five games.

I still can’t see any Wolves players to recommend to fantasy managers.

United won 3-0 at home to Forest on Tuesday and they’re now only one point off the top four. They have only won two of their last five away games and only one other team in the top half of the table has conceded more goals on their travels. They have taken 17 points from their last eight games and they kept clean sheets in four of those games.

Both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial look like very good choices for fantasy managers at the moment with the United defenders and keeper good choices too.

I think United will continue their push for a top four spot by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 0-2

Bournemouth v Crystal Palace

3pm GMT, Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth

Bournemouth lost 2-0 away to Chelsea on Tuesday to remain three points above the bottom three. They won their last home game after losing the previous two and only four other teams have conceded less goals on their own ground. They have lost five of their last six games and they failed to score in three of them with no other team conceding more goals.

Dominic Solanke, Philip Billing and Marcus Tavernier are the Bournemouth players who can offer some value to fantasy managers.

Palace had two men sent off as they lost 3-0 at home to Fulham on Monday and that defeat left them one point off the top half of the table. They have only won once in seven away games with only Forest and West Ham scoring less goals on the road. They have lost their last two games without scoring after winning three of the previous four and only the bottom five teams have scored less goals.

Wilfried Zaha is the Palace player who can do well for fantasy managers in this game with Eberechi Eze worth considering too.

I think this will be a close game with Palace probably winning by one goal.

Prediction: 1-2

Fulham v Southampton

3pm GMT, Craven Cottage, London

Fulham won 3-0 away to nine man Palace on Monday to keep themselves safely in the top half of the table. They have only won once in their last five home games, but they will fancy their chances against the team at the bottom of the table. They have a very tough run of games coming up and three points from this game might offset some of the potential damage done in those games.

Aleksandar Mitrovic is the Fulham player to have for fantasy managers with Andreas Pereira a good option too.

Southampton lost 3-1 at home to Brighton on Monday and that defeat saw them drop to the bottom of the table. They have lost five of their last six away games and they failed to score in four of those games with no other team losing more away games. They have lost their last four games and they conceded 11 goals in those games with only Bournemouth and Forest conceding more goals.

I can’t see any Southampton players to recommend to fantasy managers either.

I think Fulham should be good enough to win this game by a couple of goals.

Prediction: 3-1

Manchester City v Everton

3pm GMT, Etihad Stadium, Manchester

City won 3-1 away to Leeds on Thursday to stay five points behind Arsenal at the top of the table. They lost their last home game against Brentford, but they won the previous seven and no other team has scored more goals on their own patch. They have won four of their last five games and no other team has scored more goals with only Newcastle and Arsenal conceding less.

Erling Haaland remains the must have City player for fantasy managers with Kevin de Bruyne and Joao Cancelo very good options too.

Everton lost 2-1 at home to Wolves on Monday to stay one point clear of the relegation zone. They have only taken one point from their last four away games and they failed to score in each of those games with only Forest and West Ham scoring less goals on their travels. They have lost their last three games and they only scored one goal in those games with only Wolves and Forest scoring less goals.

I can’t see any Everton players who might make a difference for fantasy managers at the moment.

I can’t see anything other than a comfortable City victory in this game.

Prediction: 3-0

Newcastle United v Leeds United

3pm GMT, St. James’s Park, Newcastle

Newcastle won 3-0 away to Leicester on Monday to stay in third place seven points behind the leaders Arsenal. They have won their last four home games while only conceding  one goal in those games and they’re one of two teams still unbeaten on their own ground. They have taken 25 points from their last nine games and they have kept five clean sheets in their last seven with no other team conceding less goals.

Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron and Nick Pope are the best of the Newcastle players for fantasy managers with most of the rest of their team worth considering too.

Leeds lost 3-1 at home to City on Wednesday night and that defeat left them two points above the bottom three. They have lost five of their last six away games with only Forest taking less points on the road. They have lost six of their last eight games and only three other teams have conceded more goals.

Both Rodrigo and Crysencio Summerville were in great form for fantasy managers before the City game and they will hope to regain that form very soon.

I think Newcastle will continue their great run by taking maximum points in this game.

Prediction: 3-1

Brighton And Hove Albion v Arsenal

5.30pm GMT, AMEX Stadium, Brighton

Brighton won 3-1 away to Southampton on Monday and they’re only one point off the top six. They have only won once in their last four home games, but only two other teams have conceded less goals on their own ground. They have won three of their last four games and they scored 11 goals in those games, but they face both Arsenal and Liverpool in their next three games.

Leandro Trossard is the pick of the Brighton players for fantasy managers with Pascal Gross a good option too.

Arsenal came from behind to win 3-1 at home to West Ham on Monday to maintain their five point lead at the top of the table. They have taken 13 points from their last five away games and they only conceded one goal in those games with no other team taking more points or conceding less goals away from home. They have taken 25 points from their last nine games with only City scoring more goals and only Newcastle conceding less.

Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are all in great form for fantasy managers with the Arsenal defenders worth considering too.

I think this will be a very close game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Sunday January 1

Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa

2pm GMT, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London

Spurs came back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Brentford on Monday, but they’re now 10 points off the top of the table. They have lost two of their last three home games and they conceded seven goals in those games, but only two other teams have taken more points on their own patch. They have only won two of their last six games and they conceded 13 goals in those games, but only the top two have scored more goals.

Harry Kane is still the must have Spurs player for fantasy managers with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg a good cut price option too.

Villa lost 3-1 at home to Liverpool on Monday, but they’re still only two points off the top half of the table. They won their last away game against Brighton and that was their first away win of the season with only Forest and West Ham scoring less goals away from home. They had won two games in a row before losing to Liverpool and they have a good run of games coming up after this one.

Leon Bailey is available at a very good price for fantasy managers and he could be worth considering if he can start to put away some of the chances he has being missing.

I think Villa will make a game of it, but the chances are Spurs will take the three points.

Prediction: 2-1

Nottingham Forest v Chelsea

4.30pm GMT, City Ground, Nottingham

Forest lost 3-0 away to United on Tuesday and they’re now only one point off the foot of the table. They have taken eight points from their last four home games and they kept clean sheets in two of them. They have only lost two of their last six games, but only Wolves have scored less goals and only Bournemouth have conceded more.

I can’t see any Forest players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

Chelsea won 2-0 at home to Brighton on Tuesday, but they’re still six points off the top four. They have only taken one point and scored one goal in their last three away games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals on their travels. The win against Bournemouth was their first win in six games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals.

Kepa Azpilicueta is doing well for fantasy managers at the moment and he’s available at a good price while Mason Mount might not be the worst choice either.

I think Forest’s woes will continue with Chelsea narrowly winning this game.

Prediction: 1-2

That’s it for this week.

See you next week.
