Predictions For Premier League Gameweek 17

It's that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I did quite well in the midweek games with seven correct outcomes and three incorrect, but I didn't manage any correct scorelines which is where the real points come from. I kept my lead at the top of my predictions league despite others performing better than me as you can see from the table below.

Saturday December 17

Crystal Palace v Chelsea

12.30pm GMT, Selhurst Park, London

Palace lost at home to United in midweek and they're dropping dangerously close to the bottom three. They have only taken seven points from their eight home games and only three other teams have conceded more goals at home. They have only won once in their last nine games, but only the top four have scored more goals and only two other teams have conceded less goals.

Wilfried Zaha has been in very good form recently for fantasy managers and James McArthur hasn't done too badly either.

Chelsea ground out another win at Sunderland in midweek and they look almost unstoppable at the moment. They have taken more points away from home than any other team and no other team has conceded less goals on their travels. They have won their last 10 games in a row and only conceded two goals in the process while scoring 23.

Diego Costa remains the best fantasy option in the Chelsea team with all of their defenders great choices too and Eden Hazard can't be ignored if he's fit to play.

I think Palace will try to put it up to Chelsea, but it looks like an away win all the way to me.

Prediction: 1-3

Middlesbrough v Swansea City

3pm GMT, Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough

Boro were well beaten at home by Liverpool on Wednesday night and they have slipped far too close to the relegation zone for their liking. They have lost five of their eight home games and no other team has scored less goals at home even if their defensive record is relatively good on their own ground. They have lost three of their last five games and failed to score in three of those games too and no other team has scored less goals than Boro.

Boro defenders had being doing well for fantasy managers and they might just do so again in this game.

Swansea lost away to West Brom on Wednesday night and they're still firmly in the bottom three. They have lost six of their eight away games and only three other teams have conceded more goals away from home. They have won two of their last four games after failing to win in the previous 11 and only Hull have conceded more goals.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is the Swansea player most likely to make a difference for fantasy managers.

This is a real relegation six pointer with both teams desperately wanting victory and I think they might both have to settle for a point.

Prediction: 1-1

Stoke City v Leicester City

3pm GMT, BET365 Arena, Stoke

Stoke managed to get a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton on Wednesday night despite playing most of the game with only 10 men. They have won as many games as they have lost at home and only three other teams have scored less goals at home. They have only lost twice in their last 11 games and they have kept a clean sheet in five of those games.

Stoke defenders have done well recently and fantasy managers should certainly consider having one in their side.

Leicester didn't take long to revert to type for this season at least as they followed their win against City by losing at Bournmouth in midweek. They have only taken one point in their eight away games and only Hull have conceded more goals away from home. They have only won once in their last seven games and they're still only four points above the relegation zone which is hardly a healthy position for the reigning champions.

I thought Leicester players might be on the up for fantasy managers, but it looks like I was wrong.

I think this will be a low scoring game and the chances are Stoke will just about get the better of proceedings.

Prediction: 1-0

Sunderland v Watford

3pm GMT, Stadium of Light, Sunderland

Sunderland lost at home to Chelsea on Wednesday night and they're still rooted to the foot of the table despite results improving in recent weeks. They have only taken seven points in their eight home games and no other team has conceded more goals at home. Despite being at the foot of the table they have won three of their last six games and only Boro have scored less goals.

Jermain Defoe is still by far the best fantasy option in the Sunderland team with more than half of their 14 goals to his name.

Watford gave City a run for their money in midweek and they will fancy their chances away to the bottom club. They have lost half of their eight away games and have conceded twice as many goals as they have scored away from home. They have lost four of their last six games and conceded 15 goals in those games.

When Watford do well Jose Holebas does well and he could be worth considering for fantasy managers.

I think this will be another very close game and it might just end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

West Ham United v Hull City

3pm GMT, London Stadium, London

West Ham got a much needed home win against Burnley on Wednesday night and a home game against one of the bottom three gives them the perfect chance for back to back wins. They have now won as many games as they have lost at home, but only Boro have conceded more goals on their own patch. That win against Burnley was their first win in seven games and only two other teams have conceded more goals.

Dimitri Payet is the West Ham player who can make a difference for them and fantasy managers too.

Hull were well beaten away to Spurs on Wednesday night and they will do very well to avoid the drop this season. They have lost six of their eight away games and no other team has conceded more goals away from home. They have lost 10 of their last 14 games and have conceded more goals than any other team.

Robert Snodgrass is the only Hull player likely to make any sort of impact for fantasy managers.

I think West Ham should have more than enough to win this game and give themselves some breathing space at the wrong end of the table.

Prediction: 3-1

West Bromwich Albion v Manchester United

5.30pm GMT, The Hawthorns, Birmingham

West Brom won 3-1 at home to Swansea in midweek and they are now up to seventh in the table. They have won half of their eight home games and only four other teams have scored more goals at home. They have won four of their last six games and scored 13 goals in the process with only six other teams scoring more goals so far.

Matt Phillips looks the best fantasy choice in the West Brom team to me with Solomon Rondon, Nacer Chadli and their defenders worth considering too.

United got a very important win away to Palace on Wednesday night, but they're still six points outside the top four. They have won half of their eight away games and only five other teams have scored more goals on the road. They're unbeaten in seven games, but they have drawn four of those games and they're still struggling to score goals.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic is probably the United player who will do best for fantasy managers, but he costs an awful lot and some of their defenders are doing quite well at a better price.

I think West Brom will give United a tough test and they might just get a point off them.

Prediction: 1-1

Sunday December 18

Bournemouth v Southampton

1.30pm GMT, Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth

Bournemouth got a very good win at home to the champions on Tuesday night to move into the top half of the table. Only Chelsea and Spurs have won more games at home and only five other teams have scored more goals at home. They have won three of their last five games, but they have conceded more goals than any other team in the top half of the table.

Bournemouth defenders continue to do well for fantasy managers and they're available at a good price too.

Southampton played against 10 men for most of the game against Stoke on Wednesday night, but they could only manage a 0-0 draw. They have only won once in their eight away games and only three other teams have scored less goals on the road. They have taken eight points in their last five games and kept a clean sheet in four of those games, but only Boro have scored less goals and only two other teams have conceded less.

Southampton's defenders have done really well for fantasy managers and they're still available at a relatively good price.

I think this will be another very close game and it could just end with the spoils shared.

Prediction: 1-1

Manchester City v Arsenal

4pm GMT, Etihad Stadium, Manchester

City got a much needed win at home to Watford in midweek, but they're still seven points behind the league leaders. They have only won four of their eight home games and unusually for them they are not even among the top five scorers at home. The win against Watford was only their third win in 10 games and it was only their third clean sheet of the season.

With Sergio Aguero still suspended Kevin de Bruyne is the City player fantasy managers should look to.

Arsenal led away to Everton on Tuesday night, but ended up losing 2-1 and dropped to six points behind Chelsea even if they are still second. They suffered their first away defeat at Everton, but no other team has scored more or conceded less goals away from home. That defeat at Everton was their first defeat in 15 games and, but they haven't kept a clean sheet in their last seven.

Alexis Sanchez is still the must have Arsenal player for fantasy managers with others such as Theo Walcott, Mesut Ozil and Hector Bellerin pretty good options too.

This is a huge game for both teams and whoever loses could be a long way behind Chelsea and I have a feeling Arsenal might just sneak it.

Prediction: 1-2

Tottenham Hotspur v Burnley

4pm GMT, White Hart Lane, London

Spurs had a relatively easy 3-0 win at home to Hull in midweek and it moved them within three points of the top four. They're one of three teams still unbeaten at home with only Chelsea gaining more points on their own ground and no other team conceding more goals at home. After starting the season unbeaten in 12 games they have lost two of their last four, but no other team has conceded less goals than Spurs.

Christian Eriksen has been in excellent form for fantasy managers recently with Harry Kane and the Spurs defenders very good options too.

Burnley only lost 1-0 away to West Ham on Wednesday night, but it was yet another away defeat for them. They have only taken one point in their seven away games and they have only scored one goal in those games too. They have lost four of their last five games and failed to score in four of their last seven.

I can't see any Burnley players to interest fantasy managers and even more so when they've away from home.

I can't see anything other than a comprehensive Spurs win in this game.

Prediction: 3-0

Monday December 19

Everton v Liverpool

8pm GMT, Goodison Park, Liverpool

Everton came from behind to get a very good 2-1 win at  home to Arsenal on Tuesday night. They're one of only three teams still unbeaten at home and only three other teams have conceded less goals at home. That win against Arsenal was only their second win in 11 games and they have only kept one clean sheet in their last 12.

Romelu Lukaku is the Everton player most likely to do well for fantasy managers, but he can be very inconsistent.

Liverpool got a relatively easy 3-0 win away to Boro on Wednesday night to move back up to second in the table. They have won five of their nine away games and no other team has scored more goals away from home. That win at Boro was only their second win in five games, but they have kept three clean sheets in those five games and they're the top scorers in the league.

Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, Roberto Frimino and Divock Origi are really good fantasy options at the moment with Origi and Mane looking like the best of them.

I think this will be a very close local derby and it will more than likely end in a draw.

Prediction: 2-2

That's it for this week.

See you next week.
