Premier League Gameweek 21 Predictions

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I did pretty well last week with three perfect predictions, three correct outcomes and six incorrect outcomes, but I still can’t break into the top five in my predictions league. Here’s a look at how the top five in that league stands.

My choice of Erling Haaland as my captain paid off last week, but with two games played I would have hoped for more from him. I’ll be picking him as my captain again this week and I could probably do with making wholesale changes to my team if the truth were known. I’ll have to stick with what I have though and hope my players can help me eventually climb to a respectable rank.

Besides Haaland my team was helped by Kepa Arrizabalaga, Kieran Trippier, Gabriel Magahlaes and Martin Odegaard, but accidentally not subbing Marcus Rashford in cost me badly. I’m considering bringing in Rodrigo or Ivan Toney this week or maybe even both of them as I have a few players who are doubtful.

Saturday 21 January

Liverpool v Chelsea

12.30pm GMT, Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool lost 3-0 away to Brighton last week and that defeat left them 10 points below the top four. They have won four of their last five home games with only City scoring more goals on their own ground. They have lost their last two games and they conceded six goals in those games, but they have a relatively good run of games coming up after this one.

The way Liverpool are playing at the moment it’s not easy to choose any of their players for fantasy managers, but it’s still difficult to ignore Mohamed Salah.

Chelsea won 1-0 at home to Palace last week and they’re only behind Liverpool on goal difference going into this game. They have only taken two points from their last five away games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals on the road. The win against Palace was only their second win in 10 games and no other team in the top half of the table has scored less goals.

Chelsea players haven’t exactly performed too well for fantasy managers so far and it might be best to avoid them in this game.

This is a tough game to call with both teams so badly out of form, but I think Liverpool might just manage a win.

Prediction: 2-1

Bournemouth v Nottingham Forest

3pm GMT, Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth

Bournemouth lost 2-0 away to Brentford last week and they’re now only one point above the bottom three. They have lost three of their last four home games with only Wolves scoring less goals on their own patch. They have lost their last four games without scoring and no other team has conceded more goals.

I can’t see any Bournemouth players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

Forest won 2-0 at home to Leicester last week and that win moved them five points above the relegation zone. They won their last away game against Southampton, but that was their first away win of the season with no other team scoring less goals on their travels. They have taken 11 points from their last six games and they have kept clean sheets in their last two with only Wolves scoring less goals.

Both Serge Aurier and Morgan Gibbs-White are in good form at the moment and could be the Forest players to keep an eye on for fantasy managers.

I think Forest will continue to pile the misery on Bournemouth by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 0-2

Leicester City v Brighton And Hove Albion

3pm GMT, King Power Stadium, Leicester

Leicester lost 2-0 away to Forest last week and they’re now only two points above the relegation zone. They have lost their last three home games without scoring with only Southampton taking less points and only Wolves scoring less goals at home. They have lost their last four games and they only scored one goal in those games with only three other teams conceding more goals.

I can’t see any Leicester players doing enough to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

Brighton won 3-0 at home to Liverpool last week and that win moved them within three points of fifth place. They have won their last three away games and they scored 10 goals in those games with only Arsenal scoring more away goals. They have won five of their last seven games and they scored 20 goals in those games with only three other teams scoring more goals.

There are a lot of Brighton players for fantasy managers to consider at the moment with Solly March, Evan Ferguson, Kaoru Mitoma and Pascal Gross all doing great work.

I think Brighton will continue to impress by taking the three points with a couple of goals to spare in this game.

Prediction: 0-2

Southampton v Aston Villa

3pm GMT, St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton

Southampton came from behind to win 2-1 away to Everton last week and they’re now only at the foot of the table on goal difference. They have lost their last three home games and they conceded eight goals in those games with no other team conceding more goals or taking less points on their own ground. They had lost six games in a row before beating Everton with only Bournemouth conceding more goals.

James Ward-Prowse has looked very good recently for fantasy managers and he’s definitely worth considering.

Villa won 2-1 at home to Leeds last week and they’re now only three points off the top half of the table. They have won their last two away games after failing to win the previous seven with only four other teams scoring less goals on the road. They have taken 13 points from their last six games and this is the first of two good fixtures for them.

Leon Bailey could possibly be the Villa player to make a difference for fantasy managers.

I think this will be a very close game with a draw the most likely outcome.

Prediction: 1-1

West Ham United v Everton

3pm GMT, London Stadium, London

West Ham lost 1-0 away to Wolves last week and they’re now only off the bottom of the table on goal difference. They have lost their last three home games and they only scored one goal in those games with only Wolves scoring less goals on their own patch. They have only taken one point from their last seven games and they failed to score in four of those games with only Wolves scoring less goals.

I can’t see any West Ham players to interest fantasy managers at the moment.

Everton lost 2-1 at home to Southampton last week and like West Ham they’re only off the foot of the table on goal difference. They have only taken two points from their last five away games and they only scored one goal in those games with only Forest scoring less goals away from home. They have only taken two points from their last five games with only Wolves scoring less goals.

Despite their lowly position Demarai Gray has done quite well recently for fantasy managers.

I think West Ham will get a much needed win in this game, but it will be very close.

Prediction: 1-0

Crystal Palace v Newcastle United

5.30pm GMT, Selhurst Park, London

Palace lost 1-0 away to Chelsea and drew 1-1 at home to United last week and they’re now five points adrift of the top half of the table. They have only taken one point and scored one goal in their last three home games with no other team conceding more goals at home. They have lost four of their last six games and they are in the middle of a run of very tough games.

Michael Olise is the form Palace player for fantasy managers at the moment even though they’re struggling to score goals.

Newcastle won 1-0 at home to Fulham last week and they’re only one point behind the third placed team going into this game. They have taken 14 points from their last six away games and they kept clean sheets in three of those games with no other team conceding less goals on their travels. They’re unbeaten in 14 games and they kept clean sheets in nine of those games with no other team drawing more games or conceding less goals.

Newcastle’s defenders and keeper are doing fantastic work for fantasy managers at the moment with Miguel Almiron worth a shout too considering their next three opponents.

I think Newcastle will continue their impressive run by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 0-2

Sunday 22 January

Leeds United v Brentford

2pm GMT, Elland Road, Leeds

Leeds lost 2-1 away to Villa last week and they only have two points to spare over the bottom three. They have only won once in their last seven home games and that’s something they need to remedy quickly. They have only taken two points from their last five games and they conceded 11 goals in those games with only three other teams conceding more goals.

Rodrigo remains the best of the Leeds players for fantasy managers, but there could be a few others to watch in the next few weeks.

Brentford won 2-0 at home to Bournemouth last week and they’re ahead of both Liverpool and Chelsea going into this game. They have taken seven points from their last three away games, but their next two away games are far from easy. They have taken 15 points from their last seven games and they scored 14 goals in those games.

Ivan Toney is the Brentford player to have for fantasy managers with David Raya, Ben Mee and Mathias Jensen worth considering too.

I think Brentford should have just enough to narrowly win this game.

Prediction: 1-2

Manchester City v Wolverhampton Wanderers

2pm GMT, Etihad Stadium, Manchester

City lost 2-1 away to United and then came back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 at home to Spurs last week which left them five points behind Arsenal at the top of the table having played a game more than them. No other team has taken more points or scored more goals at home, but they have only won once in their last three home games. They have only taken 10 points from their last six games, but no other team has scored more goals.

Erling Haaland remains the best of the City players for fantasy managers with Riyad Mahrez and Kevin de Bruyne looking pretty good too.

Wolves won 1-0 at home to West Ham last week and that win was enough to move them out of the relegation zone. They have taken five points from their last three away games with only Forest scoring less goals on the road. They have taken seven points from their last four games, but no other team has scored less goals.

Both Daniel Podence and Hugo Bueno have done well recently for fantasy managers, but this might not be the best game for them.

I can’t see anything other than a comfortable victory for City in this game.

Prediction: 3-0

Arsenal v Manchester United

4.30pm GMT, Emirates Stadium, London

Arsenal won 2-0 away to Spurs last week to maintain their five point advantage at the top of the table and they have a game in hand on the rest of the top four too. They’re one of only two teams still unbeaten at home with only City and Liverpool scoring more goals at home. They have won 15 of their 18 games with only City scoring more goals and only Newcastle conceding less.

Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Martinelli are in great form for fantasy managers with all of Arsenal’s defenders and keeper looking good too.

United won 2-1 at home to United and drew 1-1 away to Palace last week and they’re in third place eight points behind Arsenal going into this game. They have taken seven points from their last three away games with only Arsenal taking more points on the road and no other team in the top half of the table conceding more away goals. They had won five games in a row before drawing with Palace and they have a very good run of games after this one.

Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes are the United players of interest to fantasy managers at the moment with Luke Shaw impressing too.

This is a game which could go either way, but the chances are Arsenal will take all three points.

Prediction: 2-1

Monday 23 January

Fulham v Tottenham Hotspur

8pm GMT, Craven Cottage, London

Fulham lost 1-0 away to Newcastle last week, but they’re only two points behind Spurs ahead of this game. They have taken 10 points from their last five home games with only five other teams scoring more goals on their own ground. They had won four games in a row before losing to Newcastle and they face two of the big six in their next two games.

If he can just stop missing penalties Aleksandar Mitrovic would be a great choice for fantasy managers while Andreas Pereira looks pretty good too.

Spurs lost 2-0 at home to Arsenal and 4-2 away to City last week and they’re now five points behind fourth place and they have played a game more than all of the top four. They have only won three of their last eight away games, but only three other teams have scored more goals on their travels. They have lost six of their last 10 games and they conceded 21 goals in those games with no other team in the top half of the table conceding more goals.

Harry Kane is probably the only Spurs player doing enough to interest fantasy managers at the moment.

I think this will be a very close game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end all square.

Prediction: 1-1

That’s it for this week.

See you next week.
