Predictions For Premier League Gameweek 17

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I did reasonably well last week with one perfect prediction, five correct outcomes and four incorrect outcomes which was enough to move me up to fifth place in my predictions league at long last. Here’s a look at how the top five in that league stands.

Pos.    Player.                    Total
1 (3)    Ali Bergkamp.       970
1 (1)    Invader 67.            970
3 (3)    AFC Dave.            960
4 (2).   Gooner Law.         930
5 (6)    jamrockrover.        925

Saturday December 14

Liverpool v Watford

12.30pm GMT, Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool won 3-0 away to Bournemouth last week to keep their eight point lead at the top of the table. They’re the only team with a 100% home record and no other team has scored more goals on their own ground. They have won 15 of their 16 games with only City scoring more goals and only Leicester conceding less.

Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are the Liverpool players to have for fantasy managers with their defenders doing pretty well too.

Watford drew 0-0 at home to Palace last week and they’re still two points adrift at the foot of the table. They have only won once in their eight away games and no other team has conceded more goals on their travels. They have only won once in their 16 games with no other team scoring less goals and only Norwich and Southampton conceding more.

I can’t see any Watford players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

I can’t see anything other than a comprehensive Liverpool victory in this game.

Prediction: 4-0

Burnley v Newcastle United

3pm GMT, Turf Moor, Burnley

Burnley lost 5-0 away to Spurs last week and they’re only three points above the relegation zone. They have lost three of their last four home games and they conceded 10 goals in those games. They have lost six of their last eight games and only the bottom three teams have conceded more goals.

Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood have done pretty well for fantasy managers with Dwight McNeil worth considering too.

Newcastle won 2-1 at home to Southampton last week and they’re only in the bottom half of the table on goal difference. They have won two of their last three away games, but only four other teams have conceded more goals on the road. They have taken 13 points from their last six games, but only Watford and Palace have scored less goals.

Jonjo Shelvey has done very well for fantasy managers in recent weeks and he could be worth a shout.

I think Burnley’s home form might just be enough to see them take the three points in this game.

Prediction: 2-1

Chelsea v Bournemouth

3pm GMT, Stamford Bridge, London

Chelsea lost 3-1 away to Everton last week, but they’re still in fourth place with five points to spare over fifth place. They have won four of their last five home games and they kept clean sheets in three of those games with only Leicester conceding less goals at home. They have lost three of their last four games and no other team in the top half of the table has conceded more goals.

Tammy Abraham is the best of the Chelsea players for fantasy managers with Christian Pulisic, Mason Mount and Willian worth considering too.

Bournemouth lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool last week and they’re only one point above the bottom three. They have only taken one point from their last five away games and they failed to score in three of those games. They have lost their last five games and they have to play two of the “big six” teams in their next three games.

I don’t think there are any Bournemouth players doing enough at the moment to interest fantasy managers.

I think Chelsea should return to winning ways with a couple of goals to spare in this game.

Prediction: 2-0

Leicester City v Norwich City

3pm GMT, King Power Stadium, Leicester

Leicester won 4-1 away to Villa last week to strengthen their grip on second place. They have won their last seven home games and no other team has conceded less goals at home. They have won their last eight games and they scored 25 goals in those games while only conceding three.

Jamie Vardy is an absolute must have for fantasy managers at the moment with James Maddison and all of Leicester’s defenders and keeper doing very well too.

Norwich lost 2-1 at home to Sheffield United last week  after leading 1-0 and they’re still second last in the league. No other team has taken less points or scored less goals away from home. They have only taken five points in their last 11 games and they failed to score in six of those games.

Despite turning things around a little in recent weeks it’s still difficult to recommend Norwich players to fantasy managers, but if I had to both Teemu Pukki and Todd Cantwell would be worth considering.

I can’t see anything other than a comfortable Leicester victory in this game.

Prediction: 3-0

Sheffield United v Aston Villa

3pm GMT, Bramall Lane, Sheffield

United came from behind to win 2-1 at Norwich last week and that win kept them in the top half of the table on goal difference. They have lost more games than they have won at home with only Watford and Palace scoring less goals on their own patch. The win against Norwich was their first win in five games and only Leicester and Liverpool have conceded less goals.

Some of United’s defenders are still doing pretty well for fantasy managers even if the clean sheets have dried up and Lys Mousset could be a consideration if he’s fit to play.

Villa lost 4-1 at home to Norwich last week and they’re only above the relegation zone on goal difference. No other team has taken less points or conceded more goals away from home. They have lost five of their last seven games and they conceded 15 goals in those games.

Jack Grealish has been the Villa player to have for fantasy managers in recent weeks and it looks like he could continue to be.

I think this will be a very close game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end all square.

Prediction: 2-2

Southampton v West Ham United

5.30pm GMT, St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton

Southampton lost 2-1 away to Newcastle last week and they dropped back into the bottom three on goal difference as a result of that defeat. Only Watford have taken less points at home and no other team has conceded more goals on their own ground. They have taken seven points from their last four games and they haven’t kept a clean sheet in 11 games with no other team conceding more goals.

Danny Ings has been in great form for fantasy managers for quite a while now and he’s still available at a very good price.

West Ham lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal after leading last week and they’re only one point above the relegation zone. They have only won once in their last six away games and they failed to score in four of those games. They have only won once in their last 10 games and they’re sliding quickly towards the wrong end of the table.

I can’t see any West Ham players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

I think Southampton’s recent results suggest they will narrowly win this game.

Prediction: 2-1

Sunday December 15

Manchester United v Everton

2pm GMT, Old Trafford, Manchester

United won 2-1 away to City last week and they’re only five points off fourth place now. They’re unbeaten in their last seven home games with only four other teams taking more points at home. They’re unbeaten in five games and they scored 12 goals in those games to move up to fifth place.

Marcus Rashford is in great form for fantasy managers while both Anthony Martial and Daniel James could be worth a shout too.

Everton won 3-1 at home to Chelsea last week to move out of the bottom three as they got life after Marco Silva off to a good start. No other team has taken less points or conceded more goals away from home. They have only won three of their last 12 games and they play three of the “big six” in their next five games.

I’m still not sure there are any Everton players to interest fantasy managers at the moment, but that could change if they have really improved.

I think United will continue their progress by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 2-1

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Tottenham Hotspur

2pm GMT, Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton

Wolves drew 2-2 away to Brighton last week and they’re only behind fifth placed United on goal difference. They have lost one of their eight home games, but no other team has drawn more games at home. They’re unbeaten in 11 games, but they drew six of those games and no other team has drawn more games.

Raul Jiminez and Matt Doherty are the Wolves players of interest to fantasy managers while Joao Moutinho has done well in recent weeks too.

Spurs won 5-0 at home to Burnley last week and they’re only a point behind Wolves going into this game. They have only won once in their eight away games and only four other teams have conceded more goals on the road. They won three of their last four games and they scored 12 goals in those games.

Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli are looking very good for fantasy managers at the moment with Serge Aurier and Harry Kane performing well too.

I think this will be a very close game with a draw being the most likely outcome.

Prediction: 2-2

Arsenal v Manchester City

4.30pm GMT, Emirates Stadium, London

Arsenal came from behind to win 3-1 away to West Ham last week and they’re only two points off fifth place despite their recent troubles. They lost their last home game against Brighton, but that was their only home defeat so far and no other team has drawn more home games. The win against West Ham was their first win in eight games and they have a very tough run of games over the next few weeks.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still the only Arsenal player for fantasy managers to consider.

City lost 2-1 at home to United last week and it looks like their title defence is over despite the season not having reached the halfway point yet. Only Liverpool have taken more away points and no other team has scored more goals on the road. They have only won two of their last five games and they haven’t kept a clean sheet in six games.

David Silva, Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus are probably the best of the City players for fantasy managers.

This looks like it will be a very close game and I think Arsenal might just emerge with the three points.

Prediction: 2-1

Monday December 16

Crystal Palace v Brighton And Hove Albion

8pm GMT, Selhurst Park, London

Palace drew 0-0 away to Watford last week and they’re still in the top half of the table on goal difference. They have only won three of their eight home games, but only Watford have scored less goals at home and only Leicester have conceded less. They have taken seven points from their last three games and they kept clean sheets in each of those games too.

Palace’s defenders and keeper are looking pretty good for fantasy managers at the moment.

Brighton drew 2-2 at home to Wolves last week and they’re now four points above the bottom three. They won their last away game at Arsenal, but only three other teams have scored less goals away from home. Their win against Arsenal was their only one in five games, but they look more than capable of staying up the way they have played recently.

Matt Ryan and Lewis Dunk are still the best Brighton players for fantasy managers, but Neal Maupay has done well in recent weeks too.

I think Palace will get the better of a low scoring and very close game.

Prediction: 1-0

That’s it for this week.

See you next week.
