Predictions For Premier League Gameweek Nine

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I did reasonably well last time out with one perfect prediction, five correct outcomes and four incorrect outcomes which moved me up a few more places in my predictions league. I’m closing in on the top five in that league and here’s a look at how that top five stands.

Saturday October 19

Everton v West Ham United

12.30pm BST, Goodison Park, Liverpool

Everton lost 1-0 away to Burnley in their last game after they were reduced to 10 men and that defeat saw them slip into the bottom three. They lost their last two home games and conceded five goals in the process after not conceding a home goal in almost six months. They have lost their last four games and only Watford and Newcastle have scored less goals.

It’s hard to see any Everton players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

West Ham led at home to Palace in their last game, but they ended up on the wrong end of a 2-1 result which saw them miss the chance to go into the top four. They’re one of only three teams still unbeaten away from home with only Liverpool and Sheffield United conceding less goals on their travels. Until last week they hadn’t lost since their opening game and they have a good run of fixtures coming up.

West Ham defenders had looked very good options for fantasy managers before their last game while Andriy Yarmolenko and Sebastien Haller have looked pretty good too.

This is a tough game to predict, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Aston Villa v Brighton And Hove Albion

3pm BST, Villa Park, Birmingham

Villa won 5-1 away to Norwich in their last game to climb out of the bottom three. They’re unbeaten in their last three home games and they kept clean sheets in two of those games. They have scored nine goals in their last three games and only five other teams have scored more goals.

John McGinn has been the pick of the Villa players so far while Wesley Moraes has looked pretty good recently too.

Brighton won 3-0 at home to Spurs in their last game to move a couple of points above the relegation zone. They haven’t scored in their last three away games and only four teams have scored less goals away from home. Their win against Spurs was their first win since their opening game and they failed to score in four of their last six games.

Matt Ryan and Lewis Dunk have been the most impressive of the Brighton players so far for fantasy managers while Aaron Connolly’s performance against Spurs could see some interest in him at a very good price.

This looks like it could be a close game, but I think Villa might just sneak a narrow victory.

Prediction: 2-1

Bournemouth v Norwich City

3pm BST, Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth

Bournemouth lost 1-0 away to Arsenal in their last game, but they’re still in the top half of the table. They have only won once in their four home games and only three other teams have conceded more goals at home. They haven’t kept a clean sheet so far and they had scored in every game too until their last game.

Callum Wilson is the pick of the bunch in the Bournemouth team for fantasy managers with Josh King and Harry Wilson worth considering too.

Norwich lost 5-1 at home to Villa last week and winless Watford are now the only team below them. They’re the only team without a point away from home with only Watford conceding more goals on the road. They have lost their last three games since they beat City and they conceded nine goals in those games with no other team conceding more goals.

It’s getting harder to recommend Norwich players to fantasy managers, but Teemu Pukki, Todd Cantwell and Emiliano Buendia must surely come good again.

I think Bournemouth’s firepower will be too much for a Norwich team who are finding defending very difficult in the top flight.

Prediction: 3-1

Chelsea v Newcastle United

3pm BST, Stamford Bridge, London

Chelsea won 4-1 away to Southampton last time out and they’re only outside the top four on goal difference. They have only won once in their four home games, but they don’t play any of the other big six teams in their next seven home games. They have won three of their last four games and they scored 12 goals in those four games.

Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount are in great form for fantasy managers while Callum Hudson-Odoi has looked very good since his return from injury.

Newcastle won 1-0 at home to United in their last game and that win moved them out of the bottom three. They have lost three of their four away games with only Watford conceding more goals away from home. The win against United was their first win in five games and they only scored three goals in those games with only Watford scoring less goals.

Fabian Schar is the Newcastle player most likely to impress for fantasy managers, but it’s always a risk to pick Newcastle players.

I can’t see anything other than a comfortable Chelsea win in this game.

Prediction: 3-1

Leicester City v Burnley

3pm BST, King Power Stadium, Leicester

Leicester lost 2-1 away to Liverpool in their last game, but they’re still in the top four. Only Liverpool have taken more points at home with only Liverpool and City scoring more home goals and only Palace conceding less. They only play one of the big six in their next nine games and only Liverpool have conceded less goals.

Jamie Vardy, Ricardo Pereira and James Maddison are the Leicester players who could make a difference for fantasy managers.

Burnley won 1-0 at home to Everton in their last game and that win moved them up to seventh place. They have drawn their last three away games and they have scored in each of their away games so far. They’re unbeaten in four games and they kept clean sheets in two of those games.

Nick Pope and Erik Peters are doing pretty well for fantasy managers while Ashley Barnes has gone off the boil after a very good start to the season.

I think Leicester will continue their quest for a top four finish by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 2-0

Tottenham Hotspur v Watford

3pm BST, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London

Spurs lost 3-0 away to Brighton in their last game and that came only a few days after they conceded seven goals against Bayern Munich. Only Liverpool have won more home games with only Palace and Leicester conceding less goals at home. They have lost two of their last three games, but only three teams have scored more goals.

Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son are the Spurs players most likely to do well for fantasy managers and particularly so in this game.

Watford drew 0-0 at hone to Sheffield United in their last game, but they’re still rooted to the foot of the table. They have only taken one point from their four away games and no other team has scored less or conceded more goals on their travels. They’re the only team without a win and no other team has scored less goals with only Norwich conceding more.

I can’t see any Watford players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

Despite Spurs recent problems I think they should win this game comfortably.

Prediction: 3-0

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Southampton

3pm BST, Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton

Wolves won 2-0 away to City in their last game to put their slow start to the season well and truly behind them. Only three teams have taken less points at home, but they have scored in all of their home games. They have won their last two games without conceding a goal and no other team has drawn more games.

Rui Patricio has been the best of the Wolves players so far for fantasy managers with Raul Jiminez not doing too badly either.

Southampton lost 4-1 at home to Chelsea in their last game and they’re only outside the bottom three because they’ve scored more goals than Everton. They have won two of their four away games and they kept clean sheets in both of those wins too. They lost their last three games and they conceded nine goals in those games with only Norwich and Watford conceding more goals.

Danny Ings has done well for fantasy managers in recent weeks, but Southampton players haven’t really excelled so far for.

I think Wolves will continue their revival by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 2-0

Crystal Palace v Manchester City

5.30pm BST, Selhurst Park, London

Palace came from behind to win 2-1 away to West Ham in their last game and they’re only outside the top four on goal difference. They’re one of only four teams unbeaten at home and no other team has conceded less home goals. They have taken 13 points from their last six games and they have kept three clean sheets in their opening eight games.

Palace’s defenders have done quite well for fantasy managers so far with Patrick van Aanholt the pick of the bunch.

City lost 2-0 at home to Wolves in their last game and they’re already eight points behind Liverpool at the top of the table after only eight games. Only Liverpool have taken more points away from home with no other team scoring more goals on the road. They have lost two of their last four games despite scoring 13 goals in those four games.

If he’s fit to play Kevin de Bruyne is the City player to have for fantasy managers with Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez and David Silva all doing very well too.

I think City will start their attempt to try to catch Liverpool by narrowly winning this game.

Prediction: 1-2

Sunday October 20

Manchester United v Liverpool

4.30pm BST, Old Trafford, Manchester

United lost 1-0 away to Newcastle in their last game and they’re now only two points above the bottom three. They have taken seven of their nine points at home with only three other teams conceding less goals at home. They have only won once in their last seven games and they only scored five goals in those games.

Marcus Rashford has been the best of the United players for fantasy managers, but none of them have done well in recent games.

Liverpool got a late goal to win 2-1 at home to Leicester in their last game and they moved eight points clear at the top of the table. They have won all of their away games and only two other teams have scored more away goals with no other team conceding less goals on the road. They have won all of their games so far with only City scoring more goals and no other team conceding less.

Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are the best of the Liverpool players for fantasy managers with all of their defenders doing quite well too.

I think Liverpool will continue their winning ways by getting the better of United in a very close game.

Prediction: 1-2

Monday October 21

Sheffield United v Arsenal

8.00pm BST, Bramall Lane, Sheffield

United drew 0-0 away to Watford in their last game and they’re still two points above the relegation zone. They have lost three of their four home games and no other team has scored less goals at home. Only Liverpool have conceded less goals, but only three other teams have scored less.

John Lundstram has been the Sheffield United player to have for fantasy managers with the rest of their defence doing quite well too.

Arsenal won 1-0 at home to Bournemouth in their last game to move up to third in the table. They haven’t won in their last three away games and it was their away form that cost them a top four finish last season. They have only lost one game so far and that was away to Liverpool, but the clean sheet against Bournemouth was only their second one so far.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the Arsenal player to have for fantasy managers, but none of their other players have been too impressive so far.

I think this will be a close game with Arsenal just about getting the better of proceedings.

Prediction: 1-2

That’s it for this week.

See you next week.
