Predictions For Premier League Gameweek Five

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I didn’t do too badly last time out with two perfect predictions, four correct outcomes and four incorrect outcomes and I managed to move up a few places in my predictions league. Here’s a look at how the top five in that league stands with me not too far behind them.

Saturday September 14

Liverpool v Newcastle  United

12.30pm BST, Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool won 3-0 away to Burnley in their last game to maintain their 100% record and stay on top of the table. Only City took more points and scored more goals at home last season and they have already scored seven goals in their first two home games. They’re the only team to have won all of their games so far with only City scoring more goals and only Palace conceding less.

Mohamed Salah has proved to be the best of the Liverpool players for fantasy managers yet again while Sadio Mane or any of their defenders are very good choices too.

Newcastle came from behind to get a 1-1 draw at home to Watford in their last game. They won away to Spurs in their last away game, but Liverpool will be a very different prospect. They finished 11 points above the bottom three last season and I have no doubt they would settle for more of the same this season.

I can’t see any Newcastle players to interest fantasy managers at the moment.

I can’t see anything other than a comfortable Liverpool victory in this game.

Prediction: 4-0

Brighton And Hove Albion v Burnley

3pm BST, AMEX Stadium, Brighton

Brighton lost 4-0 away to City last time out and they have failed to score in their last two games. Only Watford have taken less points at home so far this season and no other team has scored less goals at home. They only avoided relegation by two points last season and judging by their results so far they could be in for a tough ride this season too.

I’m not sure there are any Brighton players to really interest fantasy managers, but Lewis Dunk and Matt Ryan are both worth considering due to their prices.

Burnley lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool in their last game, but their fixtures are about to get a good deal better for them. They only won four of their 19 away games last season, but they have a good run of away games coming up. They lost to Arsenal and Liverpool in their first four games, but they only have one game against any of the big six in their next 10 games.

Ashley Barnes has been the outstanding Burnley player so far for fantasy managers and he has a good run of games coming up.

I think this will be a close game and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end all square.

Prediction: 1-1

Manchester United v Leicester City

3pm BST, Old Trafford, Manchester

United let a lead slip as they drew 1-1 away to Southampton in their last game and they haven’t won since their opening game. They took less points and scored less goals at home than the rest of the top six last season and they conceded more goals too. They only won half of their games last season and they conceded more goals than the rest of the top six.

Daniel James looks like he could be the bargain buy in the United team for fantasy managers while Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial (if he’s fit) are both doing quite well too.

Leicester won 3-1 at home to Bournemouth in their last game to move up to third place in the table. Their home record was only marginally better than their away record last season and they could do quite well if they can improve that home form. They’re one of only three teams unbeaten so far with only Palace conceding less goals.

Jamie Vardy has done very well for fantasy managers in recent weeks, but Leicester have some very tough games coming up while Youri Tielemans and James Madison are worth considering too.

This looks like another very close game and it might just end with the spoils shared too.

Prediction: 2-2

Sheffield United v Southampton

3pm BST, Bramall Lane, Sheffield

United came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 away to Chelsea in their last game as they again showed they can compete in the Premier League. No other team took more points or conceded less goals at home in the Championship last season and they have won one of their first two home games this season. If they’re going to stay up their home form will be crucial and this is the type of game they need to get something from.

John Lundstram is the reasonably priced defender fantasy managers are always looking for and certainly worth having on the bench at least.

Southampton came from behind to get a 1-1 draw at home to United last time out as they put their slow start behind them. They only won four of their 19 away games last season and only four other teams scored less goals on the road. They only avoided relegation by five points last season and their only win so far was against a team who were down to 10 men for more than half of the game.

I’ve predicted a good season for Nathan Redmond and he looks like he could be a good choice for fantasy managers, but he’s injured at the moment.

I think this game could go either way and the chances are it will end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace

3pm BST, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London

Spurs led 2-0 away to Arsenal in their last game, but they had to settle for a point and they’ve only won once in their first four games. They lost five of their 19 home games last season, but their only win so far this season did come at home. They have only taken 16 points from their last 16 games, but they have a chance to put that to rights in their next five games.

Harry Kane is yet again the Spurs player to have for fantasy managers.

Palace won 1-0 at home to Villa last time out and that win moved them up to fourth place. Only five teams took more points away from home last season and only three teams scored more away goals. They have conceded less goals than any other team so far, but only Watford have scored less goals.

Patrick van Aanholt looks like he could be the Palace player to have for fantasy managers yet again.

I think Palace will give Spurs a run for their money, but Spurs will win narrowly.

Prediction: 2-1

Wolverhampton Wanderers v Chelsea

3pm BST, Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton

Wolves twice came from behind away to Everton in their last game game, but they ended up losing 3-2 and they’re one of only two teams without a win so far. They only lost five home games last season, but they have drawn their first two at home this season. They’re one of only two teams without a win so far, but three draws are keeping them out of the bottom three on goal difference.

Raul Jiminez has been the Wolves player to have for fantasy managers so far.

Chelsea let a two goal lead slip at home to Sheffield United in their last game and they ended up only taking one point from the game. They have won one of their two away games, but no other team has conceded more goals away from home so far. Only the top two conceded less goals last season, but only Norwich have conceded more goals in the first four games this season.

Tammy Abraham has done really well for fantasy managers in the last two games while Mason Mount looks a decent purchase too.

It’s not easy to predict how this game will go and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

Norwich City v Manchester City

5.30pm BST, Carrow Road, Norwich

Norwich lost 2-0 away to West Ham in their last game to leave them second last in the league. No other team took more points at home in the Championship last season and only one team scored more goals and they have scored five goals in their first two home games this season. Despite scoring six goals in their first four games no other team has conceded more goals and it will be very hard for them to stay up if they keep conceding so many goals.

Teemu Pukki is the Norwich player making a real impression for fantasy managers so far with Todd Cantwell and Emiliano Buendia doing quite well too.

City strolled to a 4-0 win at home to Brighton in their last game to stay two points behind Liverpool at the top of the table. No other team took more points or scored more goals on their travels last season and they’re already the leading scorers away from home this season. They won more games and scored more goals than any other team last season and the league looks like a straight race between them and Liverpool this season.

Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling look like they could be the City players to have for fantasy managers this season while all of their defenders and keeper are good options too.

As good as Norwich might be in attack I think they could suffer badly in this game.

Prediction: 1-4

Sunday September 15

Bournemouth v Everton

2pm BST, Vitality Stadium, Bournemouth

Bournemouth lost 3-1 away to Leicester in their last game and they face another tough test in this game. Their home form has kept them in the Premier League and it will be vital for them again this season. They were the top scorers outside of the six last season, but only the bottom two clubs conceded more goals.

Both Callum Wilson and Harry Wilson seem to be the Bournemouth players to have for fantasy managers at the moment.

Everton were pegged back twice at home to Wolves in their last game, but they still managed to take the three points to move up to sixth in the table. Their away form was a real hindrance last season and they failed to score in their first two away games this season. They have a pretty good run of games coming up and they could be in a strong position if they can do well in those games.

Everton defenders have done well so far for fantasy managers with Lucas Digne the pick of them whike Alex Iwobi might not be a bad choice at a fairly good price.

I’m not too sure how this game will go, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.

Prediction: 2-2

Watford v Arsenal

4.30pm BST, Vicarage Road, Watford

Watford led away to Newcastle in their last game, but they had to settle for their first point of the season and it wasn’t enough to save Javi Gracia’s job either. They lost as many home games as they won last season and they’re the only team without a home point so far this season. They will need the new manager “bounce” with Arsenal and City to play in their next two games.

Will Hughes has done well in the last couple of games and he could be worth considering for fantasy managers.

Arsenal came from 2-0 down to get a 2-2 draw at home to Spurs in their last game, but they dropped to fifth place after Leicester and Palace won their games. They struggled badly far too often away from home last season with only four other teams conceding more goals on the road. Only the top two out scored Arsenal last season and they only play one of the other big six teams in their next 12 games.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still the pick of the Arsenal players for fantasy managers.

I think Watford’s woes will continue in this game with Arsenal taking the three points.

Prediction: 1-3

Monday September 16

Aston Villa v West Ham United

8pm BST, Villa Park, Birmingham

Villa lost 1-0 away to Palace in their last game thanks in part to a bizarre refereeing decision late in the game and that defeat left them in the bottom three. They won less than half of their home games in the Championship last season, but they showed enough in their last home game against Everton to suggest Villa Park could become a fortress for them. They have lost three of their four games though and they’re currently in the bottom three even if it’s only on goal difference.

John McGinn has done enough in the first four games to suggest he could be a real asset for fantasy managers this season.

West Ham won 2-0 at home to Norwich last time out and they moved up to seventh place as a result of that win. They lost 10 of their 19 away games last season, but they have taken four points from their first two away games. They only play one of the big six in their next eight games and it gives them a real chance to make some progress.

Sebastien Haller looks like he could be a real winner for fantasy managers while Manuel Lanzini isn’t the worst choice either.

I think West Ham might just have enough firepower to narrowly take the three points in this game.

Prediction: 1-2

That’s it for this week.

See you next week.
