Predictions For Premier League Gameweek 23

It’s that time of the week again when I attempt to predict the outcomes of the upcoming Premier League games. I did reasonably well last week with five correct outcomes and five incorrect outcomes, but I lost more ground on the top five in my predictions league. Here’s a look at how the top five in that league stands.

Saturday January 18

Watford v Tottenham Hotspur

12.30pm GMT, Vicarage Road, Watford

Watford won 3-0 away to Bournemouth last week to move out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. They have won their last three home games and they only conceded one goal in those games, but only Bournemouth and Palace have scored less goals at home. They have taken 13 points from their last five games and they kept four clean sheets in their last seven games, but no other team has scored less goals.

Troy Deeney, Gerard Deulofeu, Ben Foster and maybe even Ismaila Saar are all doing pretty well for fantasy managers at the moment.

Spurs lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool last week to drop to eighth place and they’re now nine points off the top four. They have only won two of their 11 away games and no other team in the top half of the table has conceded more goals on the road. They have only won once in their last five games and no other team in the top half of the table has conceded more goals.

Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli are probably the two Spurs players most like to make a difference for fantasy managers.

I think this will be a very close game with a draw probably the most likely outcome.

Prediction: 2-2

Arsenal v Sheffield United

3pm GMT, Emirates Stadium, London

Arsenal failed to hold on to a lead again when they drew 1-1 away to Palace last week to stay in 10th place. They won their last home game against United, but that was their first home win in seven games and no other team in the top half of the league has conceded more goals at home. They have only won two of their last 14 games and no other team in the top half of the table has conceded more goals.

With Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suspended it’s difficult to see any Arsenal players to recommend to fantasy managers.

United won 1-0 at home to West Ham last week to move up to sixth place and they’re four points ahead of Arsenal going into this game. They have taken 14 points from their last seven home games and they kept clean sheets in four of those games with only Liverpool conceding less goals at home. They face City after this game, but then they have a run of six good fixtures in a row.

United’s defenders and keeper have all done consistently well for fantasy managers and are all worth considering.

I think this will be another very close game with Arsenal probably emerging with the three points.

Prediction: 2-1

Brighton And Hove Albion v Aston Villa

3pm GMT, AMEX Stadium, Brighton

Brighton lost 1-0 away to Everton last week and they’re now only two points above the bottom three. They have only won once in their last five home games and this a game they really need to win. They have only won once in their last seven games, but they play four of the five teams below them in their next five games.

Lewis Dunk and Matt Ryan are the Brighton players who might be of interest to fantasy managers.

Villa lost 6-1 at home to City last week and that defeat saw them drop back into the bottom three. No other team has lost more games or conceded more goals away from home with only Norwich taking less points on their travels. They have lost six of their last eight games and no other team in the bottom half of the table has scored more goals, but only Norwich have conceded more.

Despite last week’s thrashing Jack Grealish is still a very good option for fantasy managers.

This is a big game for two teams looking to maintain their Premier League status and I think home advantage might just help Brighton to get the better of Villa.

Prediction: 2-1

Manchester City v Crystal Palace

3pm GMT, Etihad Stadium, Manchester

City won 6-1 away to Villa last week to move above Leicester into second place, but they’re still 14 points behind Liverpool. Only Liverpool have taken more points and conceded less goals at home and no other team has scored more goals on their own patch. They have won six of their last eight games and no other team has scored more goals, but it’s still not enough to catch Liverpool.

Kevin de Bruyne remains the best of the City players for fantasy managers while Riyad Mahrez and Sergio Aguero are in good form at the moment too.

Palace came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Arsenal last week and they’re still in the top half of the table. They have only won once in their last seven away games with only four other teams conceding less goals away from home. They have drawn five of their last seven games and no other team has scored less goals.

Palace’s defenders and keeper have done well for fantasy managers, but they could suffer in this game.

I think City will be too strong for Palace and will win by at least two goals.

Prediction: 3-1

Norwich City v Bournemouth

3pm GMT, Carrow Road, Norwich

Norwich lost 4-0 away to United last week and they’re now six points adrift at the foot of the table. They haven’t won in eight home games and no other team has taken less points or conceded more goals at home. They haven’t won in nine games and no other team has lost more games or conceded more goals.

Todd Cantwell and Emiliano Buendia are the Norwich players who could do well in this game while Teemu Pukki has to be considered too if he’s fit to play.

Bournemouth lost 3-0 at home to Watford last week and Norwich are now the only team below them in the league. They have lost five of their last six away games with only Norwich and Villa losing more games. They have only taken four points from their last 11 games and they failed to score in six of their last eight games with no other team scoring less goals.

I can’t see any Bournemouth players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

This is a huge game for two teams at the wrong end of the table and I think Norwich might just have enough to take all three points.

Prediction: 2-1

Southampton v Wolverhampton Wanderers

3pm GMT, St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton

Southampton came from behind to win 2-1 away to Leicester last week as they extracted some revenge for the 9-0 defeat against them earlier in the season. They have taken 10 points from their last five home games, but no other team has conceded more goals at home and only three other teams have taken less points. They have taken 13 points from their last five games and they kept two clean sheets in those games, but only Villa and Norwich have conceded more goals.

Danny Ings is almost a must have for fantasy managers at the moment while Southampton’s defenders and keeper are looking like good value too.

Wolves came from behind to draw 1-1 at home to Newcastle last week which left them in seventh place and still only three points off fifth place. They lost they last two away games after seven away games without a defeat and only three other teams have conceded less goals on the road. They have only taken one point from their last three games and no other team has drawn more games.

Despite Wolves’s recent form Raul Jiminez, Matt Doherty and Adama Traore are all still worth considering for fantasy managers.

I think this game won’t have too much in it and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it end in a draw.

Prediction: 1-1

West Ham United v Everton

3pm GMT, London Stadium, London

West Ham lost 1-0 away to Sheffield United last week to leave them only one point above the relegation zone. They won their last home game after losing the previous four, but only Norwich have taken less points at home and only three other teams have conceded more goals. They have lost eight of their last 11 games and they face seven very difficult fixtures in their next 11 games.

I’m not sure there are any West Ham players to interest fantasy managers at the moment.

Everton won 1-0 at home to Brighton last week, but they’re still in the bottom half of the table even if it is only on goal difference. Only Villa and Norwich have taken less points on the road while only Villa and Newcastle have conceded more goals. They have taken 14 points from their last seven games though and they kept three clean sheets in those games.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done well for fantasy managers in recent weeks and he’s available at a good price while Lucas Digne has come back into play too with Everton’s recent improved defensive record.

This is a hard game to call, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the spoils shared.

Prediction: 1-1

Newcastle United v Chelsea

5.30pm GMT, St. James’s Park, Newcastle

Newcastle drew 1-1 away to Wolves last week and they’re still only two points off the top half of the table. They lost their last two home games and only Palace and Bournemouth have scored less goals at home. They have only taken one point in their last four games with only Palace and Bournemouth scoring less goals.

Brave fantasy managers might be tempted to opt for Miguel Almiron considering his recent form, but it’s always a risk to opt for Newcastle players.

Chelsea won 3-0 at home to Burnley last week to stay fourth and move five points clear of fifth placed United. Only Liverpool have won more games away from home with only City and Leicester scoring more goals on their travels. They have taken seven points from their last three games after only taking six in the previous nine games and they face four very tough games after this one.

Tammy Abraham and Willian seem to be the Chelsea players most likely to perform at the moment for fantasy managers.

I think Chelsea will have too much firepower for Newcastle and should take the three points in this game.

Prediction: 1-3

Sunday January 19

Burnley v Leicester City

2pm GMT, Turf Moor, Burnley

Burnley lost 3-0 away to Chelsea last week and they’re now only three points above the bottom three. They have lost four of their last five home games and only four other teams have conceded more goals at home. They have lost seven of their last nine games and they failed to score in five of those games.

Considering their recent form I’m not sure there are any Burnley players to recommend to fantasy managers at the moment.

Leicester lost 2-1 at home to Southampton last week to drop behind City into third place. They have won six of their last seven away games with only City scoring more goals on their travels. They have only won two of their last six games after winning the previous eight and they only play two of the big six in their next 11 games.

Jamie Vardy just keeps on giving to fantasy managers while James Maddison and all of Leicester’s defenders and keeper are very good choices too.

I think Leicester will pile more misery on Burnley by taking the three points in this game.

Prediction: 1-3

Liverpool v Manchester United

4.30pm GMT, Anfield, Liverpool

Liverpool won 1-0 away to Spurs last week to move 14 points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand too. They have won all of their home games with no other team scoring more or conceding less goals on their own patch. It’s hard to see who can stop Liverpool at this stage, but United are the only team to have taken any points off them so far.

There are so many Liverpool players to choose from for fantasy managers with Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah plus all of their defenders and keeper great choices.

United won 4-0 at home to Norwich last week and they’re still in fifth place, but they’re five points behind fourth placed Chelsea. They have only won three of their 11 away games and their next four away games are all very tough ones. They have taken 16 points from their last eight games, but they have a huge task to try to get anything from this game.

If he’s fit to play Marcus Rashford is the best of the bunch in the United team for fantasy managers and he’s being ably assisted by Anthony Martial at the moment.

United are the only team Liverpool haven’t beaten in the league this season and I expect Liverpool to put that right in this game.

Prediction: 2-0

That’s it for this week.

See you next week.
